If you ask any child about what he/she feels about homework, you are most likely to get answers with negative connotations. As a parent, your job is to make sure your child does his homework on time. While most children get used to with the compulsion of doing their homework, there are cases where it becomes almost impossible to get a child to do his/her homework.
If you are facing a similar situation at your home, try to learn the reason behind the unusual behaviour of the student before you try anything else. This blog explores some major factors that may be responsible for such behaviour in a kid.
Lack of physical reward:
Children don’t usually understand the importance of education until they reach a certain age. Before they reach that age, they usually set their priorities on the basis of physical rewards associated with the tasks. Since homework does not come with such a reward, your child may not find interest in doing her homework.
It will be your job to reward her with her favourite snack, or an extra hour with video game/cartoon when she finishes her homework to help her grow interest in homework solving.
A medical condition:
We don’t want to scare you, but there are certain medical conditions that keep children from finishing their homework the way they are supposed to. Conditions like ADHD/ADD, dyslexia and dysgraphia affect the learning ability of a child.
If you notice any unusual behaviour in your kid, like not understanding the homework or failing to do it even after spending hours, it is best if you consult a paediatrician soon.
Lack of attention from your part:
Children are always looking for opportunities to skip their homework and watch TV or do the things they like. If you don't pay attention to their studies in their learning years, they will keep on finding ways to avoid their homework.
Sit with your kid and make sure he/she finish the due homework properly. You need to be a little strict in this case. And continue this practice until your kid is doing homework without any input from you.
Additionally, it is also important to have a heart-to-heart conversation with the kid regularly. It will help you understand what is going on in his/her mind. Kids don’t always share sensitive issues like bullying or sexual harassment with parents. So, you need to create an environment in your house where he/she feels comfortable sharing such things without holding anything back.
